Fry Street Quartet Starts Academic Year with Mozart, Bartok and Schumann
Utah State University’s Department of Music presents the Fry Street Quartet Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in performance at the Performance Hall on the USU Logan campus. The quartet will perform Mozart’s “Adagio and Fugue” and works by Bartok and Robert Schumann.
“The concert doesn’t have a particular theme,” said Robert Waters, violinist in the quartet and practice assistant professor of music in the Caine College of the Arts. “But we are very excited about all three pieces on the program.”
Waters said the first piece, Adagio and Fugue in C Minor, K. 546 by Mozart was written several years before the composer’s untimely death as an homage to J.S. Bach and other great Baroque masters.
The evening’s Bartok selection is his String Quartet No. 4.
“Bartok brought brilliant, innovative insights into string quartet, writing that perhaps only Haydn and Beethoven matched, and his influence has been felt in the classical music world ever since,” said Waters. “The No.4 quartet combines an intense, occasionally savage energy, a beautiful, magical sound world and indigenous folk music from his native Hungary and surrounding areas into a musical language that is compelling and unique.”
Waters said Bartok’s String Quartet No. 4 is at the pinnacle of music written for a string quartet, not only for the 20th century but for the genre as a whole.
The last piece the quartet will perform is Schumann’s String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 41 no. 1.
“The Schumann quartet is wonderfully romantic and lush,” said Waters. “There is an abundance of heart-on-the-sleeve emotion and expression.”
Tickets for the Sept. 30 Fry Street Quartet performance are $10 general admission, $8 seniors and youth, $5 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
