Frank Maile and Kendrick Shaver Named Co-Defensive Coordinators

Frank Maile (my-leh) and Kendrick Shaver have been named co-defensive coordinators [at Utah State University], it was announced Thursday [Jan. 14, 2016] by Aggie football head coach Matt Wells. Maile will also serve as an assistant head coach and work with the defensive line, while Shaver will coach safeties.

Maile, who is a 2007 Utah State graduate, has spent five years on the Aggies’ staff, as he was a defensive graduate assistant in 2009 and 2010, and its defensive line coach from 2011-13. During his three years as defensive line coach, USU posted a 28-13 record and played in three-straight bowl games, including wins in the 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and the 2013 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, along with a 2012 Western Athletic Conference championship.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Utah State and the opportunity to work with so many of the players and coaches I have in the past,” said Maile. “Utah State football has great momentum and I hope to continue leading the young men of the program to even greater achievements.”

Maile spent the past two seasons as the defensive line coach at Vanderbilt. During the 2015 season, the Commodores’ defense ranked among the top 35 nationally in nine categories, including 28th in total defense, allowing just 350.5 yards per game. The Commodores were also 22nd in scoring defense (21.0 points per game allowed) and 33rd in rushing defense (143.2 yards per game allowed).

Vanderbilt’s defense also ranked fourth nationally in both first downs allowed (206) and fourth down conversions (.235), sixth in both third down conversions (.282) and red zone defense (its opponents scored just 71.4 percent of the time), 20th in fumbles recovered (11) and 28th in passing efficiency defense (114.47).

“I’m really pleased that Frank, Heather and their kids are returning to Utah State,” said Wells. “Frank has a tremendous amount of experience with our defense and our program, both in terminology and daily operations, and his transition into this position will be very natural.

“Frank did a tremendous job at Vanderbilt helping to improve that defense and I have great confidence that he will continue to do special things here with our Aggie defense moving forward.”

As Utah State’s defensive line coach from 2011-13, Maile coached five Aggies to all-conference honors. In 2011, Levi Koskan earned second-team all-WAC honors. In 2012, Al Lapuaho earned first-team all-WAC honors and Jordan Nielsen was named to the second team. And in 2013, B.J. Larsen and AJ Pataiali’i both earned second-team all-Mountain West accolades.

Shaver has spent the past five seasons as Utah State’s cornerbacks coach and was promoted to defensive passing game coordinator in 2014. During his five years with the program, Shaver has been part of an Aggie program that has played in five-straight bowl games and won three-straight bowls from 2012-14, both of which are school records, while posting a 43-24 record. He was also instrumental in USU’s 2012 WAC Championship.

“I’m excited to also announce the position of co-defensive coordinator to Kendrick Shaver,” said Wells. “It’s a reflection of his tremendous work in the secondary with our defensive backs, his knowledge of our system and his loyalty to this program.

“Kendrick and Frank will both do a great job together leading our young men on that side of the ball.”

As Utah State’s cornerbacks coach, Shaver has coached three all-conference players, including two who have earned All-American honors and were drafted into the NFL. Will Davis earned first-team all-WAC honors in 2012, was named a third-team All-American by CBS Sports.com and was selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. Nevin Lawson earned second-team all-WAC honors in 2012 and first-team all-Mountain West honors in 2013, along with garnering third-team All-American honors from College Sports Madness, and was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. In 2014, Jalen Davis was named a True Freshman All-American by 247Sports, and received honorable mention all-MW honors in 2015.

During the 2015 season, Shaver helped lead an Aggie defense that ranked among the top 45 in the nation in 10 categories, including ranking third in the Mountain West and 17th nationally in total defense (332.5 ypg). The Aggies also ranked fourth in the MW and 12th nationally in passing defense (180.5 ypg) and 21st in third down defense, allowing opponents to convert third downs 33.8 percent of the time.
