Foreign Policy Lecture at USU Open to All

Shannon Peterson and Carolyn Rhodes, faculty members in USU’s political science department, have organized a foreign policy workshop to be held on campus Oct. 4-6. As part of the workshop, a foreign policy lecture is open to all.

Featured lecturer is Steve Lamy, who offers “From Warrior Politics to Peacemaker Politics: Rediscovering Liberalism in U.S. Foreign Policy.” The lecture is Thursday, Oct. 4, and begins at 4 p.m. at the USU Haight Alumni Center. Faculty, staff, students and members of the public are invited.

 

Lamy is dean at the University of Southern California and a professor in the university’s School of International Relations.

 

Peterson and Rhodes organized the workshop with the goal of ultimately creating an upper level undergraduate political science textbook.

 

“As professors of foreign policy, we are often confronted with student questions about how U.S. policy toward a specific region has evolved or why a particular region is important to U.S. interests,” Peterson said. “We have to respond without having an up-to-date resource available that provides the background.”

 

To accomplish their goal, Peterson and Rhodes have a USU-based solution. The workshop brings together contributors to the project — USU faculty and former students who are now scholars in their own right at institutions of higher learning across the world.

 

“In addition, a number of the authors are well-known and highly respected scholars in their field outside the university,” Peterson said.

 

The planned workshop brings the contributors together to present their chapters and to critically assess each other’s contribution. Lamy, a senior U.S. foreign policy/international relations scholar will be the facilitator for the workshop sessions and chapter presentations.

 

Current USU students will be involved in the workshop and the book project.

 

“This workshop will be an intensive exercise in collaboration, collegiality and revision,” Peterson said. “It will offer faculty and alumni the opportunity to interact with current students interested in the subject matter. Students will be asked to read the manuscript as well and evaluate it for clarity, analytical insight and readability.”
