Fire Suppression Reducing Wildlife Food Supply?

A century of fire suppression in southern Utah’s rangelands has led to a buildup of sagebrush, pinyon-juniper and conifers. These woody fire fuels, says Utah State University Extension specialist Chad Reid, are crowding out grasslands and aspen stands. The effect is a reduction of natural habitat and riparian areas, which could impact both wildlife and livestock.
