'Ferragosto' -- An Italian Celebration at the USU Museum of Anthropology

An Italian celebration continues the Museum of Anthropology’s “Saturdays at the Museum” Series at Utah State University.

 

Headlining activities Saturday, Aug. 15, is “Ferragosto: Italian Celebration of Diana, Harvest and Fertility.” Activities for families start at 11 a.m. and continue through 3:30 p.m.

 

“‘Ferragosto’ is an Italian holiday celebrated on August 15,” said Lowell Sagers, a USU student and a Saturday’s program planner. “Originally celebrated by the Roman Empire to honor the gods — in particular Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt — it is now celebrated in Italy as a harvest festival. This festival is also associated with the Roman Catholic Church’s Holy Day of Obligation to commemorate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

 

Everyone, including USU students and members of the public, are invited to the museum any time during the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday hours.

 

“Museum guests can expect games and other activities to celebrate this feast day, so come enjoy the fun,” Sagers said.

 

The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252. Free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building. For more information on this event, call museum staff at (435) 797-7545.
