Famous Trumpet Player Comes to USU
The Department of Music at Utah State University hosts trumpeter Byron Stripling in concert with the Jazz Big Bands Wednesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus.
“Byron Stripling is an entertainer,” said Jon Gudmundson, director of jazz studies and associate professor in the Caine College of the Arts at USU. “He has a magnificent sound on the trumpet, and is the whole package — he is excellent at teaching and performing.”
Stripling is the artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in Ohio, leads his own quartet and plays with groups around the world. He started playing the trumpet when he was about 10 years old and also sang for his father, a classical singer and choir director. Stripling played Louis Armstrong in the musical Satchmo: America’s Musical Legend. He has performed with more than 50 symphonies and orchestras throughout his career.
“I wanted a guest artist who plays the trumpet to emphasize our new trumpet faculty member, Max Matzen,” said Gudmundson. “I also wanted students to have the opportunity to work with a musician who can teach them about how he or she works, prepares and performs in the professional world.”
Tickets for the Byron Stripling concert are $10 adults, $8 seniors and youth, $5 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID. For more information, visit the Caine College of the Arts Box Office in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center, call 435-797-8022 or see the college’s Production Services website.
“Even if you don’t like jazz, you will enjoy Byron Stripling’s performance,” said Gudmundson. “He has this ability to connect to everyone in the audience and, I guarantee, you will love this man.”
