Family Commissions Portrait

The family of past Utah State University President E.G. Peterson will gather with invited guests at the Edith Bowen Laboratory School at 10 a.m. Sept. 18 for the unveiling of their commissioned portrait of Anne Carroll Moore.

Moore worked with the New York City Public Library and was instrumental in getting access to books for children, who at that time were not allowed in libraries or to touch books. She has been honored at the New York City Library with an arm of the children’s library in her name, and the media center in the Edith Bowen Laboratory School is named in her honor.

The Peterson family donated the commissioned portrait because of its relationship and affiliation with Moore when family members were on campus with her in the early 1960s.

College of Education and Human Services Dean Carol Strong and Utah State Provost Stan Albrecht will speak at the program, as will members of the Peterson family. Past librarians will also attend along with the principal of the school, Kaye Rhees. The Edith Bowen Laboratory School is in the College of Education and Human Services at Utah State.

Moore was friends of Edith Bowen and Emma Eccles Jones, and they collaborated on teaching early childhood education. They started a school at the Whittier Center in Logan, a school that eventually became the Edith Bowen Lab School. The school and their legacy still continue today with a new building through the Emma Eccles Jones foundation donation of more than $12 million.

The event is not open to the public.
