Faculty Member's Work Highlighted In National Geographic News
Lyle McNeal is a professor in the Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences and National Geographic News recently highlighted his important work with the Navajo Sheep Project, a program he established in 1977.
In the article released Aug. 30, author John Roach writes of McNeal's work with the Navajo-Churro, a breed of sheep introduced to North America in the 16th century by Spanish colonists. The sheep were quickly adopted by the Navajo, also known as the Diné, who considered the animals a gift from the spirits, Roach writes.
When McNeal became interested in the breed, fewer than 450 head remained. Today, upwards of 8,500 thrive in the United States.
"We saved the sheep," McNeal said.
