Part concert. Part interview. All free.
This year’s Road to Broadway at Utah State University’s Caine College of the Arts features actress and singer Jenn Colella in a presentation Friday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Caine Performance Hall on the Logan campus. All are invited.
Colella attended Columbia College in South Carolina and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in speech and drama. She then earned a master of fine arts in acting from the University of California, Irvine. Her first starring role on Broadway was in 2003 as Sissy in Urban Cowboy.
“Through the grants I have received from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation-Russell Family, the Tanner Charitable Trust and differential tuition, I want to expand my classroom beyond my majors and provide something to the whole community,” said Jason Spelbring, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre Arts. “We also invite local high schools and other theater and music classes.”
When you’re able to expand your teaching beyond the group of people you profess to, the learning happens outside of the classroom, Spelbring said.
“We have one of the most beautiful performing arts centers in this area,” Spelbring said about the Caine Performance Hall. “To be able to utilize it and bring people to see it is great. It’s remarkable that our artists don’t have any assistance from a microphone and everyone can still hear them.”
Spelbring and Colella were classmates at the University of California, Irvine.
“We launched our careers at the exact same time,” Spelbring said. “All eight of us [in the program] stayed very close and it’s lovely that all these years later I can reach out to her and she now has a career that warrants her being a guest for the Road to Broadway series.”
During the evening at USU Colella will tell the story of how she booked her first Broadway show.
“We’ll talk about her career and highlights, and as we touch on certain events, she will perform the songs that go with them,” Spelbring said. “She will be available in the lobby after the performances for a meet and greet and short question and answer session.”
Colella is also involved in audition and song work with students while she is at USU.
The Road to Broadway event is free and open to the public.
