Experience Archaeology at the USU Museum of Anthropology

Visitors at the next Saturdays at the Museum program at Utah State University will be able to experience archaeology for themselves. Activities are part of the ongoing series presented by USU’s Museum of Anthropology and takes place Saturday, Aug. 7.

 

Archaeology is the study of past human societies and the objects and evidence that they have left behind.

 

During the “Experience Archaeology” day, the museum’s staff will provide a variety of activities allowing patrons to be archaeologists for the day. Weather permitting, activities will be held on the Quad adjacent to Old Main. Guest will be able to complete surveys, excavate or throw an ancient spear, among other opportunities to learn about the exciting profession of archaeology.

 

“This event was created from our Boy Scout Archaeology workshops,” said Ashley Smith, coordinator for the Saturdays at the Museum series. “We have wanted to share these activities with the general public and are excited to finally offer this programming to museum patrons. There will be many archaeology stations, each with something for all ages.”

 

USU students and members of the public are invited to the museum anytime during open hours. It is open six days a week, with regular hours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For Saturday activities, free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.

 

The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252.

 

Funding for Saturday events is provided by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. More information about the IMLS is available online.
