Erik Skinner Named Assistant Golf Coach at Utah State

Utah State [University] head golf coach Dean Johansen announced the hiring of Erik Skinner as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I’m excited to have him as part of the team,” Johansen said. “It’s going to be good. He’s a competitor, he understands athletics and he understands golf. He’s been involved with high school golf for nine years in the state, so he’s got a pretty good relationship with the coaches and he knows a lot of the players.”

Skinner, who is the assistant PGA professional at Logan River Golf Course, spent nine seasons as head coach of Logan High School’s boys golf program. He is a Class A member of the PGA of America since 2010.

“I’m excited to work with this group of kids,” said Skinner, who officially began his duties earlier this fall. “They are phenomenal kids and I’m really excited to be around them and work with them.”

Utah State wrapped up the fall portion of its golf schedule earlier this month [October] by finishing in eighth place at the Cal State Northridge-hosted Bill Cullum Invitational.

The Aggies enjoyed a successful fall campaign, though. Senior Seokwon Jeon captured medalist honors at the OGIO Utah Invitational with a collegiate-best 12-under 201 (66-70-65) for the third tournament victory of his career. Team-wise, Utah State finished in the top seven in three events, including taking second at the Utah Invitational and fourth at the Notre Dame-hosted Fighting Irish Golf Classic.

During his time at Logan HS, Skinner coached Arman Ben-Jacob and Justin Kim, who both earned first-team all-state honors.

Skinner spent three seasons as the director of basketball operations for Utah State’s men’s program from 2003-06, helping the Aggies amass a 72-21 overall record, along with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a Big West Conference Tournament title and a Big West Conference regular season championship.

The Aggies open the spring portion of their schedule Feb. 8-9 at the Southern Utah Invitational in Cedar City, Utah.

Prior to becoming the director of basketball operations with the Aggies, Skinner served as a student assistant for two seasons under former Utah State head coach Stew Morrill.

A 1999 graduate of Idaho State, Skinner was a two-year letterwinner for the Bengals. Skinner, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Idaho State, began his collegiate career at Eastern Arizona College.

A native of Logan, Utah, Skinner prepped at Logan HS and graduated in 1993. He served an LDS Church Mission in Houston, Texas, from 1994-96. He and his wife, Deana, have three children: Zach (11), Emilee (8) and Beckham (5).
