Equine Herpes Virus Outbreak

A recent outbreak of the neurologic form of equine herpes virus was traced to an equine cutting horse show April 29 to May 8 in Ogden, Utah. Horses at the event may have been exposed and after leaving may now have exposed horses at their home farms or other equine facilities.

Exposed horses should initially be monitored for fever and neurologic signs (including weakness/paralysis of the hind legs) for at least seven days. Owners should immediately notify their veterinarian if signs are detected. Horses that attended the event in Ogden and other horses currently on the same premises as the horse exposed at the event should be quarantined at home.

In response to the developments, Utah State University Extension has posted several items relating to the current situation, including an overview, a horse owner monitoring log and recommendations for exposed horses.
