Equine Ed Center Development Campaign Announced

Utah State University's College of Agriculture and USU Cooperative Extension announce the kick-off of a development fund campaign for the university’s new Equine Educational Center.

Due to the expansion of Innovation Campus, the Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences Department will move the existing equine facility on 600 East in North Logan to a new location. The state of Utah appropriated about $1 million for the new facility, but an additional $2 million in private funds must be raised to purchase land for the center, along with paddocks, fencing, shelters and watering systems.

"The move affords us the opportunity to develop an equine facility that better accommodates our undergraduate and Extension programs," said Noelle Cockett, dean of the College of Agriculture. “The new facility will also enhance our ability to host clinicians and horse shows for students and the public.”

Cockett said an undergraduate emphasis in equine business/management will be added to the existing animal science degree offered by the college.

“The new center will provide increased hands-on opportunities for students and more extensive involvement in daily farm activities,” said Patricia Evans, assistant professor in the ADVS department and Extension equine specialist. “Both the local community and the statewide horse industry will realize benefits from programs provided for youth and adults.”

At the new center, students will develop skills in breeding, foaling, training and the feeding and care of horses of all ages, she said.

A location for the new center has not yet been selected.
