EPA Recognizes USU as Commuter Friendly

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named Utah State University one of the “Best Workplaces for Commuters” among colleges and universities. USU is included among 72 other universities on the national list.

USU was recognized for offering free campus bus use, being part of a transportation association and for running its fleet of buses on alternative fuels, among other criteria. Secure bicycle parking and an emergency ride home program were also cited.

This is the first time the EPA has released a national list of innovative colleges and universities committed to improving air quality, saving energy and reducing traffic congestion, while improving quality of life for employees, an EPA press release said.

“We are pleased to recognize the efforts made by universities to provide commuter benefits that encourage employees to find alternative ways to commute to work, other than driving alone,” said Margo Oge, EPA’s director of the Office of Air Quality and Transportation. “By giving its employees these options, Utah State University is helping to improve air quality, save energy and reduce traffic congestion.”

Among Utah schools, the University of Utah and Brigham Young University were also named to the list. For a complete list of Best Workplaces for Commuters among colleges and universities, visit the Web site.
