Election dates set for March

Final dates for this year's Associated Students of Utah State University elections were announced Tuesday evening at the Executive Council meeting.

 

Students who want to run for office need to have their applications turned in by March 9 and the election will run from March 30 to April 5, said Emily Bott, ASUSU public relations vice president.

 

The current Executive Council also faces the decision if current officers can be involved in the elections and campaigning.

 

Director of Student Involvement and Leadership Tiffany Evans said in years past the Executive Council has always decided as a body what their involvement in the elections should be.

 

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association asked ASUSU for financial help for this weekend's Chinese New Year celebration. The legislation was passed and CSSA received $470.

 

Club members explained the importance of the holiday for Chinese students comparing it to Christmas or New Years in the United States when students want to be at home celebrating with their families.

 

The celebration, which started two years ago, needed extra funding this year due to a growing number of people interested in attending, thus the need for more food and other necessities, Gabe Carter diversity vice president said. The club also expressed a need for costumes for the entertainment portion of the evening. The celebration will be held Friday night in the LDS Institute Cultural Hall.

 

"I went as a freshman and loved it," Student Advocate Al Lambert said.

 

Plans were also announced by Executive Vice President Tagg Archibald to travel to the Legislature on Feb. 10 and distribute Aggie Ice Cream during the lunch hour. Bott announced as well that the Tsunami Relief effort on campus has now raised $10,000 with plans for a possible benefit concert to raise more in the works.
