Elaine Thatcher and Bruce Saperston Among Humanities Honorees

In addition to Ken Brewer’s Distinguished Humanities Award, two Utah State University faculty members will be honored by the Utah Humanities Council.

 

Elaine Thatcher and Bruce Saperston will receive a 2006 Humanities Award, recognizing their work with the Mountain West Symposium on Song. Thatcher is the program director of the Mountain West Center for Regional Studies at USU, and Saperston is department head in USU’s Music Department. The Mountain West Center for Regional Studies and the music department combined efforts to present the Mountain West Symposium on Song.

 

The 2006 Humanities Awards are presented to Utah citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the humanities. Thatcher and Saperston will be honored at a Feb. 1 ceremony in Salt Lake City.

 

The Mountain West Symposium of Song, held at Utah State University, provided a fun and in-depth exploration of various genres of vocal music — traditional folk songs, contemporary fine art songs, contemporary folk and jazz. The event included presentations on music from other parts of the world and how that music impacts western music. The multi-day extravaganza featured live performances, lectures, lecture-demonstrations and panel discussions.
