Distinguished HASS Alum Amanda Butterfield to Speak at USU

A popular broadcast journalist will discuss her career as the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences continues its Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series at Utah State University. March’s guest is KSL television’s Amanda Butterfield (USU, ’01).

 

Butterfield is featured Friday, March 26, 11:30 a.m., at the Haight Alumni Center. Admission is free and all are invited, especially students in the College of HASS and its Department of Journalism and Communication.

 

The HASS Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series is provided by USU’s College of HASS and is hosted by Dean Yolanda Flores Niemann.

 

Butterfield is a well-known figure on KSL news, and she recently covered the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her USU lecture will include highlights of her education at USU, her first job and her current position at KSL. She will recount the favorite stories she has covered as a broadcast journalist and discuss her professional opportunities.

 

Butterfield is the anchor of Eyewitness News on KSL at the 4, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. broadcasts. When she first arrived at KSL 5 television, she was the early morning reporter for Eyewitness News Today and Eyewitness News at Noon. She then moved to the anchor of Eyewitness News weekends with Keith McCord.

 

Butterfield said she is thrilled to be back in her home state, working at the station she grew up watching.

 

Born and raised in Bountiful, Butterfield graduated from Woods Cross High School, then Utah State University, where she played soccer on scholarship and graduated from the department of journalism and communication.

 

Butterfield began her professional broadcast career in Bend, Ore., as the evening weather anchor. She left KTVZ as the anchor of all the evening’s broadcasts, as well as producer and anchor of the 11 p.m. newscast. Her next move was across the Cascades to Eugene, Ore., at KMTR, where she reported and anchored the 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. newscasts.

 

Her reporting has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists. Vancouver was not her first Olympic coverage experience. She spent nearly a month in China covering the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. There, she followed local athletes and reported on historical sites in the city. When she’s not working, she enjoys soccer, traveling, snowboarding, yoga and reading.
