Distinguished Chemistry Alum to be Honored and Speaks April 17

Utah State University alum Steven D. Colson is the recipient of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry’s 2007 Alumni Achievement Award. He speaks on campus Tuesday, April 17 and, following his talk, will be honored along with current USU students at the department’s spring awards ceremony.

 

“We welcome Dr. Colson’s return to campus and look forward to hearing about the research he’s pursued during his distinguished career,” says Steve Scheiner, professor and head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

 

“Interactions Between Molecules, Photons and People” is the topic of Colson’s talk at 3 p.m. in Widtsoe Hall, room 330. His lecture is free and open to all.

 

Colson graduated from USU in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. After earning a doctorate from Cal Tech and conducting postdoctoral research at the National Research Center in Ottawa, Canada, the Idaho native served on the faculty of Yale University for 21 years. He subsequently joined the Pacific Northwest National Lab’s W.R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory as associate director. The recipient of numerous research awards, Colson has published more than 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

 

The department holds its spring awards ceremony at 5 p.m. in the Haight Alumni Center. In addition to Colson, award recipients include Michael G. Barker, who receives the George H. and Billie Bush Emert Scholarship Award, and Jonathan Gardner, recipient of the Marjorie H. Gardner Teaching Award.

 

Graduate student Whitney Wooderchak and undergrad Matthew Jorgensen are recipients of the Maeser-Bauer Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Wooderchak also receives the D.A. Greenwood Memorial Award in Biochemistry and Jorgensen is the recipient of the Maeser-Bauer Undergraduate Scholarship Award.

 

Dmitry Yu Zubarev and Katarzyna Rudzka receive the Chemistry and Biochemistry Alumni Award. Molly Hubbard is the recipient of the R. Gaurth Hansen Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship Award.

 

Elizabeth Lund is Outstanding Graduating Senior in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Elisabeth Pound receives the American Institute of Chemists Foundation Undergraduate Award.

 

Jeran Stratford is the recipient of the Irving Condie Frost Endowed Scholarship Award and Ryan Campbell receives the Harris O. and Eleanor Y.Van Orden Endowed Scholarship Award. Campbell is also the recipient of the Division of Analytical Chemistry American Chemical Society Award.

 

Recipients of the Garth L. Lee Undergraduate Scholarship Award are Christina M. Hansen (1st year), Douglas K. DeMille (2nd year), Brittany Webb (3rd year) and Sandra C. Oveson (4th year).

 

Recipients of the Thomas M. Farley Freshman Chemistry Award are Matthew Chambers, Stephen B. Grandy, Kayla A. Grint, Lijun Lee and Christina M. Hansen.
