Debate Team Victorious Again

Utah State University’s speech and debate team returned from the Great Salt Lake Speech and Debate Tournament held at the University of Utah with another victory, announced volunteer team coach Tom Worthen.
 
Competing against 18 universities from 13 states during the weekend of Jan. 15-16, the debate team took first and second place at the tournament in debate and fourth place overall. The team travels to its last tournament at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., the last weekend in January. The Utah State team is currently ranked first in its conference and 18th in the nation in debate.
 
Individual results from the University of Utah meet follow:
 
Chelsi Sutton and Eric Peatross, first place, debate; Katie Holmes and Starla Weaver, second place, debate; Trevor Linderman and Adam Fulton, fourth place, debate, losing to the team from South Carolina that won the national championship in debate last year.
 
In speech events:
 
Eric Peatross, first place, informative speaking, first, after dinner speaking and first, persuasive speaking; Chelsi Sutton, second, persuasive speaking and third, informative speaking (she was also named second-best individual debater at the tournament); Sheila Mayne, third, poetry; Adam Fulton, third, after dinner speaking.
