Debate Team Sweeps Tournament
The Utah State University Speech and Debate Team returned from its first tournament of the year winning first, second and third places in debate. The tournament was held at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls Sept. 11. The team is under the direction of volunteer coach Tom Worthen and is based in the Department of Languages, Philosophy and Speech Communication.
The tournament hosted teams from seven schools, including regional powerhouses Boise State and Carroll College, Coach Worthen said. Also attending were Brigham Young University, Albertson's College, Northwest Nazarene and the College of Southern Idaho.
Utah State's students who placed in debate were Tom Grover, Clayton Coleman, Sheila Langford, Richard Walker, Tarah Johnson and Eric Peatross. Grover also took first place in Extemporaneous Speaking and Adam Fulton took first place in Impromptu Speaking.
"This is an impressive start to the season," Worthen said. "The team is in its second year and operates on a donated budget."
