Cross Country Heads to Albuquerque for Mountain Region Championships
Utah State’s [University] men and women’s cross country teams travel to New Mexico this weekend [Nov. 14] to compete in the 2014 NCAA Mountain Region Championships. The meet will be hosted by the University of New Mexico at the UNM North Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M., Friday, Nov. 14.
The women's six-kilometer race begins at noon (MT) with the men’s 10-kilometer race starting at 1 p.m. (MT). Results and a recap will be posted to www.UtahStateAggies.com, when available.
Heading into the Mountain Region Championships, the Aggie men rank ninth in the region while the Aggie women are ranked 12th, according to the latest ranking by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
“We’re looking forward to the region championship, especially on the women’s side,” said USU head coach Gregg Gensel. “We feel that there were some teams at the Mountain West Championships that we could have beat. This course suits us better and we’re excited to compete.”
Last time out, senior Eric Shellhorn led the USU men to a fifth-place finish at the 2014 Mountain West Conference Championships. Shellhorn finished 15th with a time of 24:14.80.
Sophomore Tori Parkinson was the top finisher for the USU women, helping them capture seventh place at the 2014 Mountain West Conference Championships. Parkinson finished 22nd with a time of 21:22.50.
The top two teams in each race at the Mountain Region Championships will automatically advance to NCAA Championships, as will the top four individual athletes in each race that are not on a team advancing. Those finishing in the top 25 will also receive all-Region honors. The results from the nine regions across the country will be compiled by the NCAA to determine the at-large bids, which will be announced on Saturday.
The 2014 NCAA Cross Country National Championships will be hosted by Indiana State University at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday, Nov. 22.
