Crimes Near USU Campus: Students Urged to Take Precautions

An aggravated assault and two robberies near the Utah State University campus this past week has prompted a warning from university police chief Steve Mecham for students and others to be on the lookout.

Sunday (Dec. 10) a male was approached by three males in the area of 400 East 500 North, according to university police. The victim was approached and assaulted. He said a gun may have been involved.

 

The assault may be related to two robberies that occurred near campus earlier in the week. The first occurred near 300 East and 500 North at about 7 p.m. on Dec. 6. The second robbery occurred near 700 North and 700 East at around 7 p.m. on Dec. 7, according to police.

 

Police said that in both of these incidents a pedestrian was approached by the perpetrator who demanded money. A gun was seen in both instances, but the victim in the second robbery told police that it may have been a toy gun. No money was gained by the suspects in either case.

 

Logan City Police, which is handling the case, is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrest. The suspects are described as males, about six feet tall, medium build wearing denim pants and dark hooded sweatshirts, usually worn up over their heads.

 

USU police ask that if anyone sees anything suspicious or witnesses any crime, to immediately call 911 or the university police at 797-1939 or Logan City Police at 716-9400.

 

Police also urge students, faculty and staff to travel, when possible, in groups after dark. Those in need of an escort may call university police.
