Community Night Headlines 2015 Engineering Week at Utah State

Whoever said engineering isn’t fun has never participated in E-Week Community Night at Utah State University.

It’s one of the biggest events of E-Week — a nationwide tradition that started more than 60 years ago as a way to recognize the importance that engineering has on society and as a way to encourage more young people to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Utah State University’s College of Engineering will hold several events to mark E-Week, from Feb. 17-21. Community Night takes place from 6 -8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Taggart Student Center on the Logan campus.

The general public is invited to attend. There will be student research highlights, product and technology demonstrations from Utah companies, tours of USU’s engineering facilities, activities for kids, science and engineering demonstrations and more.

College of Engineering Dean Christine Hailey said the event is a fun opportunity for community members to learn more about engineering programs at USU and see exciting student and faculty research up close.

“E-Week is a favorite for students and faculty alike,” she said. “Each year during Community Night we open the doors and invite the public to come see what makes USU Engineering great.”

Kade Beck, engineering senator for the USU Student Association, is one of the coordinators for this year’s event. He said Community Night is the perfect family night activity.

“Community Night is an opportunity for us to showcase the innovation of the College of Engineering,” he said. “Graduate research will be on display along with several companies ranging from Logan to Salt Lake that will be in attendance to showcase some of their products.”

Other Community Night activities include an egg drop competition for high school students and a balsa wood bridge building event.

Beck said community night is proof positive that engineering isn’t just math and science, but the application of diverse knowledge and creativity to benefit society and solve complex problems.
