College of Science Recognizes Top Students, Faculty

Utah State University’s College of Science hosted an awards ceremony and reception April 25 to recognize the college’s top scholars.

“It’s a distinct honor to recognize the achievements of our outstanding students and faculty,” said Don Fiesinger, dean of the college.

 

College of Science Student Senator Brittany Webb was recognized for her service during the 2006-07 academic year. She continues her service for a second term as senator during the 2007-08 year.

 

Also recognized at the ceremony were 2006-07 Science Council members Kevin Abernathy, Nathon Allred, Christopher Bowen, Kathryn Chapman, Kellon Hansen, Derrick Hathaway, Douglas Holt, Jeremy Jennings, Bryce Jensen, Elise McKenna, Benjamin Oveson, Braden Parker, Richard Petersen, Jed Rasmussen, Daniel Sharp, Jeran Stratford, Kimberly Warburton and Ian Whipple, along with Science Ambassadors Sherry Baker, Scott Johnson, Uyen Lam, Mikalla Loosli, Kathryn Morgan, Jacob Pluid, Camille Smith and Brittany Webb.

 

Scholar of the Year is Elizabeth Lund and Dean’s Scholar of the Year is Rebecca Atkins. Valedictorian for Fall 2006 was Carli Capener Potter and Valedictorian for Spring 2007 is Melody R. Anderson. Jan Marie Andersen was recognized as Undergraduate Student Researcher of the Year.

 

A-Pin recipients for Fall 2006 are Nathan Carruth and Kimberly Thatcher and Honors Graduates are Melody Anderson and Jonathan Gardner.

 

College of Science Undergraduate Research Minigrant recipients for 2007-08 are Gregory Allan, Douglas Ball, Alma Jones, Michael Keller, Nicholas Lambert, Michael Larson, Jarron Lembke, Andrew Pound, Erik Sibbernsen, Merissa Swainston and Adam Thompson.

 

Recipients of the Willard L. Eccles Undergraduate Research Fellowships for 2007-08 are Nathaly Carranza, Jennifer Fisch, Bradley Hintze, Tamara Jeppson, Jake Jones, Arthur Mahoney, Sunghun Park, Cade Perkins, Shelley Taylor and Jodie Tvedtnes.

 

College of Science Scholarships were awarded to Ryan Allen, Sherry Baker, Calvin Burton, Amanda Evans, McLain Knutson, Ammon Larson, Dustin Larsen, Braden Parker, Cade Perkins and Benjamin Toney.

 

Amanda Evans is the recipient of the Theodore M. Burton Scholarship and Scott M. Johnson received the Oscar Wood Cooley Scholarship.

 

Garrett Bentley was awarded the Charles J. Sorenson Scholarship and Michael Keller received the Questar Science Scholarship. William Israelsen is the recipient of the Campbell Scientific Science Scholarship.

 

Recipients of the Seely-Hinckley Scholarships are Trey Banbury, Christopher Bowen, Bradley Hintze and Brandon Wright.

 

Justin Heavilin was recognized as Graduate Student Researcher of the Year and Matthew Bailey was named Graduate Student Teacher of the Year.

 

Ryan O’Donnell was awarded a Willard L. Eccles Graduate Fellowship for 2007-08. Chandra Vijyaprupu and Darl Flake received Presidential Graduate Fellowships.

 

Vice President for Research Graduate Fellowships were presented to Aaron Duffy, Joseph Spencer and Bradley Wahlen. Cory Vorel received the ZoBell Graduate Scholarship.

 

Joseph Li was named Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year and Piotr Kokoszka is Faculty Researcher of the Year. Lance Seefeldt is Faculty Teacher of the Year and Scott Ensign was named Faculty Advisor of the Year.

 

Dean Fiesinger received a special plaque in recognition of his service to the college. Fiesinger leaves his post July 1 and returns to full-time teaching and research in the Geology Department. He is succeeded by new dean Mary Hubbard.

 

The College of Science includes the academic departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Geology and Physics. More than 1,400 undergraduates and more than 250 graduate students are enrolled in degree programs administered by the college.
