Chinese New Year Celebration Planned at Utah State

Utah State University’s Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) presents a Chinese New Year Celebration on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Logan LDS Institute of Religion adjacent to the Utah State campus. The gathering, which is open to the public and includes a dinner and culture show, begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $9 for students and adults with advance ticket purchase or $12 at the door. Tickets for children under age 12 are $6.

 

“Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China,” said Enzhong Liu, CSSA president. “CSSA invites the community to join in our joy and experience our colorful culture and delicious food. I guarantee you will love it.”

 

The date of this year’s festival falls on the first day of the first moon of the lunar calendar and marks the beginning of year 4702 on the Chinese calendar. Typical celebrations include preparation of holiday foods, readying festive clothing, settling outstanding debts and enjoying fireworks displays. Children look forward to receiving a “red pocket” or Lai-see envelope filled with money, and adults hurry to finish food preparations and put away knives to avoid “cutting the luck” of the new year.

 

Utah State’s celebration features a menu of tiny spicy chicken, spring egg rolls, Chinese dumplings and fried rice. Entertainment includes Chinese folk music and dance, a Kung-fu demonstration and magic and fashion shows.

 

Tickets for the event are on sale in the Taggart Student Center (TSC) Customer Service Center, room 212, on the Utah State campus. Tickets will also be sold Feb. 2, 3, and 4, at a booth outside the USU Bookstore.

 

The Logan LDS Institute of Religion is located at 600 Darwin Avenue, directly west of the TSC. Parking is available at the institute and in the nearby university parking terrace at 850 E. 700 North.
