Childhood on Display at USU Museum of Anthropology

Children and childhood are the focus of an exhibit set to open Friday, Nov. 21, in Utah State University’s College of Humanities and Social Science’s Museum of Anthropology.

Titled “When I was a Child: Cross-cultural Perspectives on Children and Childhood,” the exhibit focuses on the ways in which children across the world begin to master the tools they need to transition into adulthood.

As part of the exhibition opening, the museum will host a lecture by David Lancy, USU professor emeritus. Lancy, who has long studied the anthropology of childhood, will discuss children and the ways in which they learn, master and carry out their “chores.”

From a four-year-old in Uganda tending his first goat to and eight-year-old driving a small flock of goats, the lecture will discuss child-work standard around the world and the unique way children in the United States are raised.

“[This exhibit] explores the role of children in the family economy in cultures around the world,” said Molly Cannon, curator of USU’s Museum of Anthropology. “We invite you to reflect on your responsibilities as a child and the contributions you made to your family and to join us for the exhibit opening and lecture provided by Dr. David Lancy”

The lecture begins at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21, in the Museum of Anthropology, Old Main 252 on the USU campus.

The Museum of Anthropology is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday. “Family 1st Saturdays” take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. the first Saturday of each month and include programs, crafts and activities designed to engage children aged 3-12.

There is no charge for Family 1st Saturdays and admission to the museum during regular hours is always free.
