Chi Omega Sorority Grants a Wish

Last spring, 14-year-old Dylan visited Disney World with his family thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the donation of Chi Omega sorority at Utah State University.

The Alpha Gamma chapter of Chi Omega raised $4,471 and donated it to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to kids with life-threatening diseases.

 

“Our motto is ‘Our wish is to grant a wish,’ and we worked hard all of last year to make sure it came true” said Shannon Kuwitzky, Chi Omega president. “Last spring we went to Salt Lake City’s Make-A-Wish headquarters, A Wishing Place, where kids’ dreams really come true. We were all mesmerized with the magical feeling that the Wishing Place created. It really is such an amazing organization and I am so glad our sorority’s national philanthropy is Make-A-Wish.”

 

To make the donation possible, Chi Omega members volunteered and ran concession stands at USU football and basketball games throughout the year. They also helped set up tailgating parties and cleaned USU’s basketball arena, the Spectrum, in order to reach their goal.

 

This year Chi Omega has already started the season of volunteering at the concession stands in conjunction with the football season.

 

“It takes a lot of hours and woman-power, but with our entire chapter helping out, it never feels like work” said Becky Blair. “Shouting Broadway songs while cleaning up the Spectrum and singing ‘Macho nacho man’ every time someone orders nachos at our concession stand makes it fun.

 

“Dylan is battling leukemia and seeing his wish come true made the 1,600 volunteer hours our chapter put forth worth it,” said Tabitha Lazenby, Chi Omega’s community service chair. “It was also rewarding when we set up a fishing booth at Make-A-Wish’s annual Easter Egg hunt and interacted with the children and their families.”

 

Chi Omega is a national woman’s fraternity with 170 chapters across the nation. It creates opportunities for personal growth and development throughout young womens’ collegiate careers. Chi Omega is committed to six purposes — friendship, high standards of personnel, scholarship, campus activities, career development and community service. Since 1930 the Alpha Gamma chapter of Chi Omega has had a strong and beneficial relationship with Utah State University.
