Chi Omega Sells Roses for Charity

Utah State University’s chapter of Chi Omega Sorority sold more than 1,500 roses during the Valentine’s Day holiday to benefit a children’s charity.

“Everyone loves to get roses and to support a good cause,” said Kiera Radman, Chi Omega’s philanthropy chair. “It was apparent with the incredible number of flowers sold on Valentine’s Day that everyone wanted to get into the spirit of caring.”

 

The organization raised $900 in the effort, and proceeds will be given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a program that supports children with life-threatening medical conditions through a gift-granting network. Make-A-Wish Foundation is Chi Omega’s philanthropy recipient for all chapters across the country.

 

“Showing these kids, through our donation, that the community cares, is what Valentine’s should be about,” said Melissa McRoberts. “Giving them opportunity to have their wish granted and an opportunity to flourish was our sorority’s goal.”

 

Through the fundraising effort, students at USU were able to buy red, pink, yellow or white roses for their roommates, significant other or anyone else special in their lives. Flowers were pre-sold and Chi Omega members delivered them to all on-campus housing. Others picked the flowers up at the Chi Omega house turned flower shop.

 

The sorority bought 1,200 roses and prepared them the night before delivery.

 

“We had a sisterhood activity the night before where we trimmed the roses, arranged them into bunches and attached the notes people had written, with only a couple of thorns holding up the process,” said Alexis Lear. “We ended up buying 400 more roses the day of to sell to all those last-minute people who didn’t have anything to give.”
