CHaSS Week Kicks off March 23

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean John Allen invites members of campus to celebrate CHaSS week with the college March 23-28.

A reading by Utah’s first Poet Laureate, David Lee, is one of many special events planned as Utah State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences presents its annual CHaSS Week March 23-28.

Honoring 127 years of CHaSS, the weeklong celebration will host Lee from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in the Haight Alumni House. As with all CHaSS Week events, the reading is free and open to the public.

Lee was named Utah’s poet laureate in 1997. Well known for his unique narrative style that often uses the voices average working people, Lee has authored 15 volumes of poetry, including So Quietly the Earth, Day’s Work and My Town.

A former boxer, pig farmer, seminary student, cotton mill worker and the only white baseball player for a Negro League team, Lee received a doctorate in literature, with a concentration in the poetry of John Milton, from the University of Utah. He taught at Southern Utah University for many years.

Along with Lee’s reading, CHaSS Week will include the annual CHaSS awards ceremony honoring outstanding members of the College’s student body, faculty and staff.

Among those being honored is “Friend of CHaSS” Mona Higbee Richardson, USU graduate who also taught at Logan High School before becoming the university’s first full-time academic advisor. She worked as an advisor and instructor in the Department of Elementary Education for nearly 20-years and has been a longtime CHaSS supporter.

The Long View on Civil Rights” is the title of a CHaSS Week address that will be delivered by Jason Gilmore, assistant professor of communication studies. Gilmore and two of his students recently returned from a trip to the Deep South honoring the legacy of the civil rights movement and the marking 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” and Selma to Montgomery march.

Several CHaSS Week events are geared toward fun and camaraderie. These include a Quiz Bowl, Global Picnic, ROTC Obstacle Course, Slam Poet Night and Cookies with Dean John C. Allen.

“I am very excited about CHaSS Week this year,” Dean Allen said. “The students have done a wonderful job organizing the week. The list of events highlights the breadth of this great college.”
