Celebrate Earth Day with 'Earth Tones' Concert at USU
USU's Chamber Singers, along with singers from the USU Chorale and Choral Scholars combine for "Earth Tones," a concert that celebrates the beauty of Earth for an Earth Day concert Tuesday, April 21, 7:30 p.m., Caine Performance Hall, USU campus.
Cory Evans, director of choral activities in Utah State University’s Caine College of the Arts, wants everyone to enjoy the beauty of planet Earth through songs about animals, seasons and life in and on the sea.
And that’s what is offered when the USU Chorale, Choral Scholars and Chamber Singers pay tribute to and join USU’s “Year of Water” with a regional premiere of Ocean by Irish composer Michael McGlynn.
The special concert, titled “Earth Tones,” is Tuesday, April 21, 7:30 p.m. at USU’s Caine Performance Hall.
“The choirs will combine for a captivating multimedia performance of Eric Whitacre’s ‘Cloudburst,’” Evans said. “The men will sing of life on the sea with the humorous and swashbuckling ‘A Pirate’s Life for Me,’ and the university chorale will perform Daniel E. Gawthrop’s ‘Four Seasonal Metaphors’ in a rare transcription for choir and piano. The concert will feature the sounds and sights of Earth as you’ve never seen or heard before.”
Because USU is celebrating the Year of Water, we wanted the arts to be a part of the celebration, Evans said.
“Eric Whitacre’s ‘Cloudburst’ is a masterpiece of contemporary choral music and is particularly intriguing because the combined choirs will create the sound of a thunderstorm in the Caine Performance Hall as they surround the audience,” Evans said. “It’s quite a realistic interpretation and very entrancing to feel as if you are in the middle of a rainstorm and not getting wet. The choral performances will be enhanced with projected video and sound effects to create a feeling of being in and around water. This is less of a traditional choral performance and more of a multimedia experience.”
Other pieces performed at the concert include Circle of Life and Sea Lullaby.
“I invite everyone to gear up for finals with a transfixing evening of choral music celebrating the sights and sounds of our planet,” Evans said.
Tickets for “Earth Tones” are $10 adults, $8 seniors and youth, $5 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
