Campbell Organ Festival Presents Stephen Cleobury
Organist Stephen Cleobury, director of music for the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, performs at USU Wednesday, March 18, 7:30 p.m., at the Kent Concert Hall in the Chase Fine Arts Center. The performance is part of the Campbell Organ Festival.
A guest organist from Great Britain offers a concert at Utah State University in conjunction with the Campbell Organ Festival hosted by USU’s Department of Music and the Caine College of the Arts.
Organist Stephen Cleobury, director of music for the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, performs Wednesday, March 18, at the Kent Concert Hall in the Chase Fine Arts Center. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.
Cleobury has been associated with the King’s College Choir for more than 25 years. His work there has brought him into fruitful relationships with many leading orchestras and soloists, among them the Academy of Ancient Music and the Philharmonia.
As an organist, he has played in locations from Leeds and Birmingham Town Halls to the Performing Arts Centre in Hong Kong, to the LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Cleobury has served a number of organizations in his field, including as council member, honorary secretary, president and vice president of the Royal College of Organists, warden of the Solo Performers’ section of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and president of the Incorporated Association of Organists. He is currently chairman of the IAO Benevolent Fund, which supports organists and church musicians in need.
The organ in the Kent Concert Hall has undergone an extensive renovation made possible largely due to a donation by Paulette Campbell of Logan. Her gifts to the USU Organ Program have benefitted students throughout the area with scholarships and other support, enabling them to learn about this great instrument.
“This concert gives USU an opportunity to show the residents of Cache Valley the Holtkamp organ,” said Lynn Thomas, director of organ studies at USU. “We are one of the few institutions of higher education to have such a fine instrument.”
Cleobury will open the recital by playing pieces from Bach, Sigrid Karg-Elert and Charles Villiers Stanford. He will also conduct pieces for the USU Chorale and Chamber Singers, while CCA student Noah Smith plays the organ.
