Café Sabor and Utah State Unite for Fundraiser

Café Sabor and the office of Multicultural Student Services at Utah State University will celebrate Mexican Independence Day, Thurs., Sept. 16, by uniting to raise money for scholarships.

 

A large portion of Café Sabor’s proceeds from 5-10 p.m. that evening will be donated by the owner to a scholarship fund to be administered by Utah State’s Multicultural Student Services office.

 

The scholarship will be used to benefit Cache Valley high school graduates who plan to attend Utah State and have significant financial need.

 

Justin Hamilton, a Utah State alumnus who owns Café Sabor, initiated the idea of having a scholarship night. He said the evening will not only be about great food but about helping a great cause.

 

“There are so many qualified and deserving students at Utah State, but a majority of the scholarships go to a small group of the students,” said Hamilton. “I created this event to support students who may be under-recognized but have great potential.”

 

Juan Franco, vice president for Student Services at Utah State, agreed with Hamilton that as a college education gets more expensive, it’s important to look for new ways to help students pay for their education.

 

“We have many students who are having a difficult time coming up with the money to go to school,” said Franco. “I am a firm believer that all students who can benefit from an education should be given the opportunity to get a college degree. The Café Sabor Scholarship will help students achieve their dream.”

 

In order to keep the scholarship alive, Hamilton has committed to make the event an annual tradition, and he encourages other businesses to do the same.

 

“In this valley, we are so close-knit that sometimes we don’t appreciate the value of Utah State to our community,” said Hamilton. “Utah State students, faculty and staff support our businesses, and by supporting Utah State we’re helping strengthen our economy.”

 

Hamilton also said many of the staff at Café Sabor are Utah State students and will be donating a large portion of their tips that night because they realize the value of supporting the university.

 

Aside from helping out a good cause, those dining at the restaurant will be able to enjoy Latin dance lessons, live entertainment and, they may even win a door prize. There will also be more seating available for all who would like to dine that evening.
