Cache Valley Welcomes Utah Symphony Orchestra with New Music Conductor

The Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University hosts the world-renowned Utah Symphony Orchestra under the direction of newly-appointed Music Director Maestro Thierry Fischer in a concert Thursday, Sept. 30. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall, Chase Fine Arts Center at USU.

 

 “We warmly invite all Cache Valley citizens and USU students to come enjoy this exciting welcome to Maestro Fischer and the Utah Symphony,” said Craig Jessop, dean of USU’s Caine College of the Arts.

 

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $8 for all students with presentation of ID, and can be purchased at the CCA Box Office.

 

Maestro Fischer was named the seventh music director in the 70-year history of the Utah Symphony in September 2009. He is also the principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and chief conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic.

 

According to Jessop, the performance in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center is one of Maestro Fischer’s first times to conduct outside of the Salt Lake area.

 

“To have Maestro Fischer appear in Cache Valley with the Utah Symphony Orchestra here on the USU campus in one of his first appearances outside Salt Lake is a great honor,” Jessop said.

 

Jessop served as a search committee member for the Utah Symphony Orchestra’s music director, and said he was thrilled at Fischer’s appointment.

 

“In fact, all members of the search committee were enthusiastically unanimous in his selection and appointment to this prestigious position,” Jessop said.

 

Fischer succeeds Maestro Keith Lockhart, music director of the Utah Symphony for the past 10 years.

 

“To have a conductor with the stature of Maestro Fischer is an unbelievable honor for the Utah Symphony and the citizens of Utah,” Jessop said. “His credentials as an artist are celebrated around the world.”

 

The Sept. 30 program in Logan includes works by Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Shubert and Bernstein. Ralph Matson, concert master for the Utah Symphony, is a featured soloist.

 

The Utah Symphony, which performs at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, and Utah Opera, which performs at the Capitol Theatre, reaches 450,000 citizens in Utah and the Intermountain region with educational outreach programs serving more than 200,000 students annually. The two organizations perform year-round, with performances in their home venues and at the Deer Valley Music Festival, Ogden, Sundance and in communities throughout the Intermountain West. The Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University was established in July 2010 and includes the academic departments of art, music and theatre arts and a program for interior design as well as the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art.
