Cache Chamber Orchestra Features 16-Year-Old Konlin Shen in Concert at USU

The Cache Chamber Orchestra performs Sunday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the Utah State University campus (approximately 1110 E. 610 North, Logan). There is no cost to attend the concert.

Featured soloist Konlin Shen is a 16-year-old senior at Logan High School. He began studying violin at age 5, and currently studies with Mark Emile. In addition to soloing with the Logan High Orchestra three times, Shen serves as concert master for the Logan High Chamber Orchestra. He has received numerous awards at both state and national levels. This is his second performance with the Cache Chamber Orchestra. Emile will conduct the orchestra for Shen’s performance of the third and fourth movements of the Scottish Fantasy for violin and orchestra by Max Bruch.

 

Other featured works include the first movement from Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 4, also known as the “Tragic Symphony," composed when Schubert was just 19 years old. The “tragic” in the title refers to the agitated episodes found in the work. It is also the only symphony Schubert composed in a minor key. Zorahayda is by Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen and is a musical setting for a story by Washington Irving. The musical piece describes the third princess in “The Legend of the Beautiful Princess.”

 

“The music is very descriptive of this soft, timid and extremely sensitive princess,” said Robert Frost, conductor of the Cache Chamber Orchestra. “Musical contrasts will be found in the waltzes that are a part of the Tales of the Vienna Woods by Strauss and especially in Dance of the Comedians by Smetana. This varied program also includes works by Couperin and Delibes, showcasing a selection tailored to fit most musical palettes.”

 

Cache Chamber Orchestra began a summer “pops” series last year and will perform again this summer. The first program is June 7 and will feature Rebecca McFaul, second violinist of the critically acclaimed Fry Street Quartet. This is the Cache Chamber Orchestra’s 35th season. The group is comprised of community musicians and is sponsored by USU’s Department of Music and the Caine School of the Arts.
