Birdhouses Presented in Creative Exhibit at USU

What began as a class assignment can be enjoyed by all at the Merrill-Cazier Library through October. On exhibit are birdhouses designed and built by students who took a creative projects summer course in the Interior Design program at Utah State University.

Taught by assistant professor Darrin Brooks, the students were given the assignment to design a birdhouse in the style of Pritzker Prize-winning architects. The Pritzker Prize is considered the world’s premier architectural prize, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Architecture.”

 

Students were first asked to identify and then complete research on an architect who had won the Pritzker Prize. They then presented their research in a visual and verbal presentation. Following the presentation the students were asked to design a birdhouse in the style of the architect.

 

Following a review and critique process, the students’ designs were refined and completed. The students were then asked to design a bird to accompany the exhibit. Multiple designs were represented, and the students then selected one bird to represent the entire exhibit.

 

While the month is drawing to a conclusion, the students’ birdhouses can still be seen on the lower level of the Merrill-Cazier Library near Special Collections and Archives.
