Beck-Dudley Named Dean of FSU College of Business

College of Business Dean Caryn L. Beck-Dudley has accepted a position as dean of the College of Business at Florida State University.

 

Beck-Dudley, who has served as dean of Utah State's College of Business since 2002, succeeds Joe Nosari, the interim dean of the FSU College of Business since 2004. She will remain at USU until some time in the spring or early summer; the exact date is still to be determined.

 

The decision to leave USU was a difficult one, Beck-Dudley said in a letter to colleagues in the college.

"As you know, I love Utah State University and have spent my career pursuing our mutual passion for the College of Business and the opportunities it holds," she wrote.

 

Interim USU Provost Noelle Cockett said Beck-Dudley implemented changes that led to a number of successes in the college during her tenure as dean.

 

“The College of Business is a different place than it was when Caryn became dean,” Cockett said. “She increased the visibility of the college, and she oversaw a series of accomplishments, including the establishment of the college's first endowed chair.”

 

Beck-Dudley was recognized in 2004 by the business community when she was named one of its “Visionaries: 30 Women to Watch” by Utah Business magazine.

 

Beck-Dudley oversees a business college with approximately 2,400 undergraduate majors and 350 graduate students. As dean, she is credited with establishing better student advising by creating a Career and Exploration Center to assist with career exploration and internship opportunities; advocating and guiding a proposal for a new Ph.D. program in the college; directing an aggressive redesign of the college’s Web site; and implementing processes to more effectively work with potential donors.

 

As a professor, Beck-Dudley taught business law, employment law and business ethics in the department of management and human resources at Utah State, where she also served as department head prior to becoming dean. Before arriving at the university, Beck-Dudley was an attorney in a large Salt Lake City law firm.

 

She has given presentations and written on a variety of legal and ethical topics, including natural law jurisprudence, business organizations, employment law and insider trading. Beck-Dudley also has had articles published in the American Business Law Journal, the Journal of Business Ethics, Employee Rights and Responsibilities, the Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, the Journal of Energy Law and Policy and other journals. In addition, she has served on the editorial board for the American Business Law Journal. Beck-Dudley also has been active on several boards while at Utah State, including those of the USU Research Foundation, the Center for Integrative Biosystems and the Cache County (Utah) Chamber of Commerce. In addition, she serves on the board of directors of Stampin Up!, a privately held, Utah-based company.
