Author says We Should 'Get Out of Our Cars'

On Monday, March 21, Tim Sullivan, a writer and urban planner, will give a talk about his recent book Ways to the West: How Getting Out of Our Cars Is Reclaiming America's Frontier. The book is published by University Press of Colorado and Utah State University Press.
In the book, Sullivan embarks on a car-less road trip through the Intermountain West, exploring how people living in the region are experimenting with solutions to an important challenge — sustainable transportation.
Combining personal travel narrative, historical research and his professional expertise in urban planning, Sullivan takes a critical yet optimistic and often humorous look at how contemporary Western cities are making themselves more hospitable to public transportation and imagining a life less centered on the personal vehicle.
During his talk, Sullivan will explain his project and the ideas and models he encountered for reimagining transportation in the American West. In describing his travels by bicycle, bus and train through Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Boise, Salt Lake City and Portland, Sullivan will examine the transportation evolution taking place across the region and prompt a discussion about ways that contemporary Western communities are reinterpreting classic American values like mobility, opportunity, adventure and freedom.
The talk, sponsored by Utah State University’s English Department, will be of great interest to anyone who is curious about sustainable transportation and the history, geography and culture of the American West. It will be held in the Merrill-Cazier library, Room 101 Monday, March 21, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. A question-and-answer session and reception will follow the talk.
