Art Faculty, Past and Present, in Exhibits

Boston seems to be the hot spot for artists with ties to Utah State University.

 

Christopher Terry, a current faculty member in the Department of Art, and Janet Shapero, a former colleague of Terry's in the department, are featured in separate exhibits currently showing in Boston.

 

Terry's work is included in a show titled Sensation at the Jules Place Gallery (1200 Washington Street, Loft #204, Boston Mass., 617-542-0644). Terry is known for his large still life paintings. His work joins that of Brigitte Brüggemann, Anne Blair Brown and Karen Luke. The exhibit runs through Feb. 28 and an open house reception was held last month.

 

Terry describes his work in a statement on the Art Department Web site:

 

"I work in the still life tradition because I feel objects have the power to transcend their existence as the artifacts of everyday life and become emblematic of human existence. My paintings are certainly representational, but they have a relationship to reality that recalls a stage set. My images evoke reality but do not replace it."

 

Shapero's work is featured in a solo show, Luminous Passages, at Locco Ritoro Gallery (450 Harrison Avenue, Suite 37, Boston, Mass., 617-542-1010). The exhibit runs through Feb. 26; an opening reception was held in early February. During her time at Utah State, Shapero headed the sculpture program in the Art Department.
