Are Stored Value Cards Really a Value?

Vendors of prepaid debit cards, also known as multi-purpose stored value cards or SVCs, say the cards are convenient, safer to carry than cash and easy to obtain. But consumers should do their homework before purchasing the cards says Ann House, Utah State University Extension agent. Many of these cards charge excessive usage fees, which could make them a poor value.
