Another Winning Turn for USU Speech and Debate
It was another success story for the Utah State University College of Humanities and Social Sciences Speech and Debate Team as members placed second overall at a recent tournament in McMinneville, Ore.
The Northwest Forensic Conference Speech and Debate Tournament took place Nov. 14-16 at Linfield College and included a field of 34 colleges and universities. As is becoming commonplace, USU fielded the smallest team at the tournament, with only six students competing.
“It is always rewarding to pull up in a minivan next to a chartered bus and know that my six students will compete at a level that shows quality and not quantity,” said volunteer coach Tom Worthen.
After a lengthy road trip that included an unexpected additional eight hours due to weather, each of USU’s six entrants managed to win awards. First place finishes included Garrett Smith’s win in the Informative Speaking category; his second consecutive tournament win it that category. Shelby Ruud also garnered a first place win in the persuasive speaking category for her discourse on the negative health effects of sleep deprivation.
Other team members, including Mariah Andreasen, James Mason, Ben Powell and MaryJulia Gillespie, all placed within the top 10 in a number of categories where other competitors numbered well over 30.
Utah State University’s Speech and Debate team currently is ranked second in the Northwest Forensic Conference, which includes all colleges and universities in a five-state area. The only college currently outranking USU is Whitworth College located in Spokane, Wash. The final conference tournament will be held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., at the end of January 2015.
