Ancient Marketplace: Experience Mesoamerica
Utah State University’s Museum of Anthropology again offers one of its most popular activities — an Ancient Mesoamerican Marketplace. The popular activity, now an annual event, provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about the ancient Aztec, Incan and Mayan cultures of central and South America.
This year’s marketplace is Saturday, April 2, and is a part of the Saturdays at the Museum series.
Throughout the day, a variety of stations are available in the museum’s “marketplace,” where visitors can spend a form of ancient Mesoamerican currency to participate in weaving, using a backstrap loom, making Incan jewelry and Aztec fans and learning about Mayan hieroglyphs and the Aztec calendar. All stations offer fun, hands-on learning opportunities for all.
Food samples — representative of foods eaten by the peoples from the Mesoamerican cultures — will be offered.
“The best way to learn and appreciate the history of those who came before us is to experience it,” said Jennifer Coulson, Saturdays at the Museum event planner. “This marketplace gives all the unique opportunity to participate and experience the lives of ancient Mesoamerica.”
The USU Museum of Anthropology is on the USU campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252.
In addition to its Saturday program hours, the Museum of Anthropology is open to USU students and members of the public six days a week, with regular hours Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For Saturday activities, free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.
Funding for Saturday events is provided by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. More information about the IMLS is available online.
