All Aggies Invited to Participate in USU 'Hackathon' Nov. 15-16

Eat. Sleep (not). Code. Repeat.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn to code or tinker with hardware or maybe you’re a card-carrying-techie-programming-whiz. Whatever your skill level, all Utah college students are invited to participate in the fifth annual HackUSU intercollegiate hackathon, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, on the Utah State University campus in Logan.

“Our group’s mission is to promote tech and hacker culture to improve quality of life,” says Joshua Jibson, president of HackUSU, a student club sponsored by USU’s Department of Computer Science. “Ours is the largest hackathon in Utah.”

Held in the Eccles Conference Center, the marathon begins Friday, Nov. 15, and continues through Saturday, Nov. 16. Admission is free, but participants must register online at hackusu.org.

“We encourage students of all majors to participate,” Jibson says. “Knowledge of coding and hardware is critical to all kinds of disciplines. This is a great opportunity for beginners, as well as seasoned computer scientists.”

“Hacking,” he says, doesn’t mean “breaking into anything.”

“Hacking is a new process of learning,” Jibson says. “To us, hacking means creating, innovating and building something awesome with software or hardware. It means creatively solving a problem.”

The hackathon includes opportunities to win prizes and lots of food.

“Our sponsors are providing great food and snacks throughout the hackathon,” Jibson says. “Did I mention? We’ll have FREE FOOD.”
