All Aggies Invited to Enjoy 'Science Week' Nov. 3-7 at USU
Members of the Utah State University community are invited to enjoy brain-energizing fun as USU’s College of Science Student Council hosts ‘Science Week’ Nov. 3-7.
“We invite all Aggies to channel their ‘inner geek’ and join us in some great activities,” says USU Student Association Science Senator Mikayla Mills.
Monday, Nov. 3
Start your Monday with “Cookie for a Compliment” booths in classroom buildings throughout campus, where you can write a “thank-you” note to a favorite science faculty or staff member and receive a cookie for your thoughtfulness.
Tuesday, Nov. 4
From 10 a.m.-noon, roll up your sleeves and try your hand at tying fleece quilts at booths in the Taggart Student Center second-floor lounges and the Engineering Building.
“We’re making lap quilts to donate to Logan Regional Hospital to give out to patients,” Mills says. “No experience is necessary. It only takes a few minutes to tie a few knots and you’ll contribute to an effort that brightens the lives of many.”
She notes many USU students volunteer their time at the hospital and participate in clinical internships and health professional-shadowing activities.
“Logan Regional Hospital provides many learning opportunities for our pre-health students and this is our way of saying ‘thank you’ and giving back,” Mills says.
Wednesday, Nov. 5
During Common Hour from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., all Aggies are invited to a multimedia presentation by author Porter Fox, who discusses his best-selling book, DEEP: The Story of Skiing and the Future of Snow (see related announcement). The event, held in the TSC Auditorium, is hosted by the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, the Quinney College of Natural Resources, the Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning and the USU Sustainability Council. Admission is free.
Thursday, Nov. 6
At 7 p.m., all are invited to the “Battle of the Scientists: Chemists vs. Physicists” in the Eccles Science Learning Center Emert Auditorium (Room 130.) Watch as the USU Chem Club and the USU Chapter of the Society of Physics Students try to “one up” each other with thrilling science demonstrations. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. Hands-on activities and refreshments follow the demos.
Friday, Nov. 7
“There’s antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium…” Aggie students are encouraged to brush up on the periodic table of elements and test their knowledge at “High Stakes Elemental Bingo” following the USU vs. Wyoming Football Watch Party. The event, which starts at about 9 p.m., takes place in the TSC Stevenson Ballroom. A variety of prizes, ranging from electronics to gift cards, will be awarded.
USU’s College of Science includes the academic departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Statistics, Geology and Physics.
