Aggie Volleyball Locking Horns with Seventh-Ranked Rams September 25
To open Mountain West action, Utah State [University] volleyball takes on the defending league champion and preseason favorite when the Aggies lock horns with the seventh-ranked Rams of Colorado State Thursday, Sept. 25, at Kirby Court at Wayne Estes Center. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. with a special pre-match ceremony honoring Jim and Carol Laub for their contributions in support of the Wayne Estes Center.
USU enters MW action with a 4-6 mark while CSU is 12-1 and ranked No. 7 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll. The Aggies and Rams will be locking horns against each other in Logan for the second year in a row, after last year's match-up was the first time meeting in Logan since 1989. CSU leads the all-time series, 19-14, winning the last 18 meetings. Last year, the Aggies had the ninth-ranked Rams on the ropes, winning the first two sets, but the visitors from CSU rallied to win the next three sets and take the match in five, 3-2.
The Aggies are currently at 4-6 on the 2014 ledger and have won 19 of their last 32 matches, after registering a 20-11 overall and 13-7 Mountain West ledger last season. USU won its first two Mountain West matches in school history last season, as 2013 was the Aggies' first year in the MW.
Utah State is 15th in the NCAA statistics in blocking at 2.88 blocks per set. The Aggies are also 46th in the nation in total team blocks with 118.0. Individually, junior opposite side hitter Elle Brainard is 14th in the NCAA in blocking at 1.56 blocks per set. Utah State currently tops the MW digs stats, leading the league with 15.44 digs per set. The Aggies are also third in the league in blocks per set (2.88), as well as fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.195), sixth in aces per set (1.20), and seventh in hitting percentage (.194), assists per set (11.39) and kills per set (12.22).
