Aggie Blue Bikes Refurbishs Children's Bicycles for Holiday Season Charity
Utah State University’s Aggie Blue Bikes — also known on campus as ABB — is gearing up to refurbish children’s bicycles for the Cache Valley Sub for Santa program.
For the eighth consecutive year, ABB plans to donate time, resources and labor to provide completely refurbished bicycles to children of needy families throughout Cache Valley. Project organizers say it is a way of giving back to the community that has shown ongoing support of the university and ABB. Last year ABB donated more than 100 volunteer hours and 16 bicycles to Cache Valley Sub for Santa.
“Children are the most hard core bicyclists,” said ABB mechanic Ryan Keepers. “Giving a kid a bike at a young age has the potential to turn him or her into a long term cyclist, which will have positive effects on our community.”
Since 2005 ABB has donated 87 bikes, all of which have been completely fixed and updated with new parts and a fresh coat of paint.
“Our annual Sub for Santa effort is a lot of work, but well worth it,” said program coordinator Stephanie Tomlin. “It’s amazing to see neglected, rusty kids’ bikes being turned into something that is better-than-new.”
Aggie Blue Bikes is asking for support from the Cache Valley community in the project and asks for donations of children’s bikes that are no longer used. The bikes can be donated to ABB to be re-gifted as part of the Sub for Santa program. Then, ABB and its many volunteers will complete all necessary work on the bikes.
Anyone who would like to donated can drop bicycles off at Aggie Blue Bikes on the USU campus (located between the Military Science building and the Fieldhouse on 700 North in Logan) any time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Or, anyone interested can call Aggie Blue Bikes at 435-797-8139.
Aggie Blue Bikes is a program within the Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning in the Division of Student Services at Utah State University. Aggie Blue Bikes’ mission is to add to the vibrancy of the USU campus community that Student Services promotes through bicycle lending, education and advocacy.
