Aggie Blue Bikes Announces Date for "Open Streets 2016"

The fifth annual Utah State University Open Streets Festival is Tuesday, Oct. 3, with activities running from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

For the event, Aggie Bull-evard will be closed to car traffic from 3:45-7:15 p.m. from the Big Blue Terrace to the east side of Edith Bowen Laboratory School. Both CVTD and Aggie shuttle buses will continue running both east and west bound on 700 North on regular schedules with normal pick-ups and drop-offs.

USU Open Streets Festival celebrates the vibrancy of the USU Logan campus, strengthens local connections and encourages healthy activity by opening community space to active transportation. Open Streets challenges us to examine the streetscape without cars and instead with active transportation, revealing a completely different user experience. In order to cultivate a lively event, the street will be filled with street games, performers, races, local vendors and live music.

“Open Streets is a really cool, unique opportunity for students and community members to see what USU’s campus could look like if we cut down on car traffic and encourage students to explore alternative forms of transport,” said ABB Program Coordinator Margaret McCarthy. “To me, college is a great time to get people thinking about the positive impacts that biking can have on personal health, the environment, and society. Folks don’t have to be ‘serious cyclists’ to enjoy the benefits of biking, and that’s the message we want to communicate.”

Last year the event drew more than 500 people and more than 15 local businesses participated.

This year the lead event sponsors are Aggie Blue Bikes, USU Sustainability Council and the Student Sustainability Office.
