AAAS Conference at Utah State

Climate change in the Western United States and significant emerging diseases will be discussed at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Pacific Division) Conference, held on the campus of Utah State University June 13-17.

The afternoon sessions on future climate change and its regional implications may be of particular interest to many people. Held Tuesday, June 15, from 1:30 to 5:15 p.m., they address trends in mountain snowpacks in western North America, trends in spring runoff in the western United States, forest-insect patterns altered by climate change, impacts of climate change on natural systems, impacts of climate change in the Arctic, and policies to combat global warming. This workshop is facilitated by Fred Wagner, who coordinated a congressionally mandated regional study.

Monday afternoon features a close look at emerging diseases in the West, including West Nile virus, mad cow disease, hantavirus and SARS. Other sessions will look at women in science, bio-defense, the restoration of the Colorado River, and xeriscaping with plants from the Intermountain region.
