2017 Arrington Mormon History Lecture Includes Writing Contest

In addition to attending the Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture, local and regional college and university students can also enter the lecture’s writing competition.

This year’s lecture is presented by retired general manager of Classical 89, KBYU-FM Walter B. Rudolph Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Logan LDS Tabernacle, 50 N. Main Street, Logan. The title of his lecture is “Opera and its Voices in Utah” with a performance by American tenor Stanford Olsen.

The Arrington writing competition encourages a continuation of Leonard Arrington’s scholastic tradition and legacy. Cash awards totaling $1,750 are presented to the top three students who submit essays based on the lecture.

Students must attend the lecture where official entry forms are available, and then complete an essay. Lecture notes should be submitted along with a 2,500-word essay related to the lecture, including a one-page lecture synopsis. A minimum of two outside research sources, including books, articles, newspapers or primary documents must be included in a bibliography (not part of the 2,500 words). The essay topic should relate to the lecture topic but can expand or create new connections. The writing style can be expository, persuasive or reflective, but not fiction. Submission deadline is Friday, Dec. 8, 5 p.m., and entries can be dropped off at Library Administration, Room 250, in the Merrill-Cazier Library. Students not studying on the USU campus can mail entries to: Arrington Writing Contest, Library Administration, 3000 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84322-3000. The writing contest and lecture are sponsored by Utah State University, University Libraries; the Leonard J. Arrington Lecture and Archives Foundation; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Utah State University. The lecture is also part of the USU’s Caine College of the Arts 2017-18 Year of the Arts, a year-long celebration of events and promotions spotlighting the unique power of the arts to illuminate, transform and inspire the human spirit. Prizes for the writing contest may not be awarded if no submissions are deemed worthy.
