2005-06 Undergraduate Research Fellows Named At Utah State University

Thirty-two students have been named Undergraduate Research Fellows for the 2005-06 academic year at Utah State University. Recipients receive a $1,000 stipend and the opportunity to work on a research project with a faculty mentor.

 

"These are our top students, all of them are Presidential Scholars," said Vice Provost Joyce Kinkead.  "These fellowships set them on a trajectory that will reap results when they graduate. We're pleased to offer this opportunity."

 

The students applied for the fellowships last spring, along with 150 other Presidential Scholars. Applications included an essay and resume. Faculty members interviewed the applicants during Scholars Day. The research fellows will work with associate deans from the appropriate academic college to match them, based on their interests, to faculty research projects. The fellowships range from laboratory science to humanistic scholarship, from field research to fine arts.

 

The Undergraduate Research Fellows program was inaugurated in 2003 by Vice President for Research Brent Miller and Kinkead. The program was established to encourage and reward students interested in research.

 

Last year saw 41 research fellows who continue with their projects.

 

"Some fantastic work has already been done by last year's fellows," Kinkead said. "Amanda Mortensen has worked with internationally renowned research professor Edmund Brodie of our biology department on his groundbreaking work on toxic newts and snakes. On the other hand, violinist Ann Phillips created her own string quartet. Her mentor is a member of Utah State's string quartet in residence, the Fry Street Quartet."
