About This Degree
The Technical Communication and Rhetoric (TCR) PhD program prepares students to work as researchers and teachers at colleges and universities as well as a range of careers such as professional technical communicators, UX designers, etc., in a variety of industries and government agencies or nonprofit organizations.
In this program you will take courses in foundations of technical communication, rhetorical theory, cultural and empirical research methods, user experience design, etc.
Our PhD students have the freedom to conduct research on topics that matter to them, such as environmental communication, professional communication in the Global South, and accessible document design for people with disabilities, etc.

Our PhD program is known to prepare students to work in a variety of positions in both academic and industry contexts. Many work in tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions at a variety type of institutions such as Virginia Tech, Texas State University, University of Tennessee Knoxville, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Utah, etc.. Others have taken industry positions as a technical writer, copywriter, Assistant Director of Diversity, Education, and Outreach at a research institute, etc.
